"Sounding Whales" is a project that explores the song of the humpback whale with the help of the French Horn. At Changing Room Berlin, Abigail Sanders will present her work in the form of a concert and talk. 

 

Sanders uses the horn as a tool to reproduce whale songs, using extended techniques and drawing from ideas developed in free improvisation. By translating whale song into musical compositions, she taps into the cultural communication system of humpback whales in a way that is accessible to audiences. With her work, Sanders continues the cultural line of whale-influenced music and art, since bioacoustician Dr. Roger Payne released ”Songs of the Humpback Whale" in the 1970s, on which some of her pieces are based.

In addition to a performance of her pieces, Abigail Sanders will deliver a talk about her working process and provide insights into the research background and inspiration behind "Sounding Whales".

Attendance at the event is free of charge. There will be an opportunity to donate to the non-profit whale research and conservation organization Ocean Alliance, founded by Dr Roger Payne.
